2021.12.06 05:30 qwertyasdef Are cosmetics actually a viable alternative monetization strategy?

Intro I see lots of posts of people complaining about the xp system. On these posts, there's often a comment claiming that Ninja Kiwi should get rid of xp entirely and sell cosmetics instead. This is usually followed by others arguing that cosmetics don't make enough money. Who's right?
My gut reaction to this is that I don't buy cosmetics and I don't know anyone that does, so it's probably not a viable strategy. That's no way to make an informed decision though, so I'd appreciate it if someone had data on any of the following so I can find out for real.

I don't know if any of these are publicly available. I certainly couldn't find it, but maybe someone else can. Or maybe Ninja Kiwi keeps it secret, I don't know.
In lieu of the actual facts, here's my best guess based on what information I could find. As you read, remember that this is just my thought process in coming up with a very rough estimate. I am not claiming anything written below to be true. I don't know much about these things, so my methodology could be completely wrong for all I know. If you think my process and estimates are unreasonable or my sources are wrong, please feel free to leave your own analysis. If you can find the real data, even better.
My thoughts Cost In 2020, Ninja Kiwi made $56 million in revenue and $28 million in earnings in New Zealand dollars, so converting to USD, I guess they're spending $19 million? There's no information on how that breaks down per game though. As a very rough estimate, BTD6 averaged around 10k concurrent players on Steam throughout 2020, while BTD Battles 1 had around 1k and BTD 5 only 300. I think it's fair to say that BTD 6 was their biggest game by far in 2020, so that's probably where most of their money went. As a conservative estimate, I'll assume $15 million was spent on BTD 6.
Based on SteamDB owner estimations, BTD 5 has around 800k players on Steam, while BTD Battles 1 has around 2M. If the same trend continues, then BTD Battles 2 will probably be about 2–3 times larger than BTD 6.
How does that translate into cost? If 3× the players means 3× the cost then my estimate for BTD Battles 2 would come out to be $45 million but I'm pretty sure that's not right. On the other hand, I think it's reasonable to assume that it would cost at least as much as BTD 6. This gives a range of $15–$45 million for the cost of BTD Battles 2, probably closer to the low end.
Revenue Looking back at BTD Battles 1, in October, it made $300k in revenue on iOS and $60k on Android. I couldn't find any revenue data for Steam, but I would assume it's around the same order of magnitude, so the total revenue for October is probably no more than $1 million.
We also see that on Steam, October actually had a relatively high number of players compared to the average. Assuming that the pattern of the number of players over time is similar on all platforms, the typical number of players is around half as many as in October, so BTD Battles 1 probably averaged around $500k per month, or $6 million a year.
Then BTD 6 has about 4M players on Steam which is twice as big as BTD Battles 1, and I previously explained why I expect BTD Battles 2 to be about 2–3 times as big as BTD 6, so BTD Battles 2 will probably be 4–6 times larger than BTD Battles 1. So if it had the same monetization system as BTD Battles 1, it would probably make around $24–$36 million per year which seems about right to pay for itself but likely isn't mad profits.
However, for BTD Battles 1, the top 10 in-app purchases on iOS are all gameplay-related (I couldn't find the equivalent data for Android or Steam but I don't see why it wouldn't be similar). No cosmetics show up at all. This suggests that if BTD Battles 2 were to go truly cosmetics only, the revenue would be significantly lower than the estimated $24–$36 million per year, possibly to the point that the game no longer pays for itself. Not to say that that's certain, but it definitely looks like a possibility.
Possible counterarguments The fact that no skins show up in the top in-app purchases doesn't necessarily mean that people aren't buying skins. It's also possible that since there are so many different skins, their combined purchases make up most of the revenue but no individual skin is popular enough to make it on to the top ten list. I find this somewhat implausible because the wizard tier 3&4 upgrade manages to show up despite being a single tower among many. If skins actually made up most of the revenue, there should at least be the most popular skin in the top ten list. I could be wrong though.
Maybe people have some fixed amount of money they are willing to spend, and they decide spend it on medallions and towers in order to compete because that's what other people are buying, but if those weren't for sale, they would buy skins instead. I personally feel like this is very unlikely, but I don't have an actual argument against it other than I could never imagine myself being like that. So I won't rule it out, but I'd prefer a different argument or evidence that a lot of people actually think like this.
It's also possible that the behaviours of players across different platforms aren't as correlated as I assumed. Maybe Apple users are significantly less likely to buy cosmetics for whatever reason. Maybe the Steam player count stayed relatively constant because PC players are more hardcore, but the iOS and Android numbers were originally way higher but dropped before October, so my revenue estimates are way too low. I think this actually sounds plausible, but I have no evidence for or against it.
Conclusion I wasted a bunch of time and I still don't know if selling cosmetics only is a viable business strategy. There are just too many unknowns so my ranges for the possible costs and revenues are absurdly huge. Maybe someone who knows more about software development and company finances can get a tighter estimate of how much it costs to maintain BTD Battles 2. If anyone knows the financial data for other games similar to Battles, preferably one that sells only cosmetics, maybe we could get a better idea of what the expected revenue would be. But right now, all I can say is that it doesn't look like the clear, easy solution people imply it is.
That said, there's middle ground between what we have now and only monetizing cosmetics. The xp system could definitely use some improvements without getting rid of it completely.
TL;DR: I don't know, maybe?

2021.12.06 05:29 throw-away765 How do I block the annoying Wikipedia banner asking for donations? I run a business…

Hello everyone,
I’m hoping the smart users of Wikipedia can help me answer this question: how do I block the Wikipedia donation banner? I used to be able to be able to block it with Adblock/uBlock but it seems they’ve gotten smarter about embedding it. I don’t know why they make it so large, I feel like with it being larger people are just going to be even less inclined to donate (at least that’s the consensus between my colleagues and I).
I run a business of about 3000 users and we use Wikipedia fairly often for their citation links on information. The banner is distracting to my employees and it also adds adds a few seconds (of scrolling time) to get past — and that’s if it’s just the scrolling one, often the pop up occurs. It may not seem like a lot of time, but calculate [(2-4 seconds per article) * (2000 to 2500 employees) * (20-50 times a day) and it adds up extremely quickly. I’m losing many employment hours by the end of the month.
If possible, I’d like to block this at a server level for everyone. Is there a way to reroute Wikipedia traffic and exclude this banner? Perhaps PiHole of some sort or a way to download/store a networks viewed Wikipedia articles w/o banner?
I’ve already donated like $50 last year because it’s been bothering me every year, I thought if I gave the banner would disappear and I could just give out my login to employees as the “corporate login” to be rid of it but that’s not the case.
Anyone else have/had a similar situation?
Appreciate any input. Thanks!!!

2021.12.06 05:29 rodriq04 Evergrande is back in the news- Asian markets mixed after China Evergrande warns of cash woes

Shares were mixed in Asia on Monday after troubled Chinese property developer Evergrande warned late Friday it may run out of money. Hong Kong dropped 1.2% but the Shanghai Composite index rose. South Korea’s benchmark advanced but Tokyo and Sydney declined. More broadly, investors are struggling with uncertainty about the newest coronavirus variant and about when the Federal Reserve will cut off its support for markets.
Regulators were scrambling to reassure investors after Evergrande, one of China’s biggest developers, said it may run out of money to “perform its financial obligations” as it struggles to comply with pressure to reduce its $310 billion in debt. The worry is that unsustainable levels of debt in the property sector might trigger a financial crisis. China wants to avoid a bailout but also is unlikely to let the situation deteriorate to the point where problems would cascade to that level.
A number of real estate companies have run into trouble as the government has pushed to reduce debt levels, but officials have issued statements saying China’s financial system is strong and default rates are low. Most developers are financially healthy and Beijing will keep lending markets functioning, the most recent statements said. Evergrande’s shares 3333, -19.56% plunged 9.8% early Monday, helping pull the Hang Seng HSI, -1.76% in Hong Kong down more than 1%.
Chinese tech giant Alibaba 9988, -5.53%, which has been embroiled in a multi-faceted crackdown on the industry, also dragged the benchmark lower, losing 5.4% after the company said it was replacing its chief financial officer, Maggie Wu and overhauling its e-commerce business.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 NIK, -0.36% gave up 0.4% and the S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +0.05% in Sydney slipped 0.1%. The Shanghai Composite index SHCOMP, -0.50% rose 0.4%, while the Kospi 180721, +0.17% in Seoul edged 0.4% higher. Benchmark indexes in Singapore STI, 0.93%, Taiwan Y9999, -0.05% and Indonesia JAKIDX, 0.13% gained.
“This is a week that will force uncomfortable contemplation about ‘known unknowns’ mainly associated with omicron, Fed tightening and China (regulatory/property) risks,” Mizuho Bank said in a commentary. That will bring still more uncertainty, it said.
Last week’s volatile swings on Wall Street ended Friday with more losses for stocks, as a mixed batch of U.S. job market data triggered another bout of dizzying trading.
